It has always been my philosophy over the last 18 plus years of doing non-surgical aesthetics to give my patients a natural look and not an overdone look. All of us will age, but we want to age gracefully and naturally. As much as I love using Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers (such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Voluma), Sculptra obtains that natural look my patients with facial volume loss are looking for. What makes Sculptra so different?
Sculptra contains microparticle beads of poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic polymer from the alpha-hydroxy-acid family and is derived from vegetable sources. It is considered a “bioactivator” because it works to stimulate fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen. Sculptra was first FDA approved in 2004 for HIV patients suffering from facial lipoatrophy. In 2011, Sculptra received its aesthetic indication for deep folds and hollowing seen with signs of aging.
I started utilizing Sculptra in 2005 for HIV patients, but also realized it worked beautifully for my cosmetic patients, especially those who were complaining of hollowing and shadowing in the tear troughs and cheeks. Sculptra is not indicated and should be avoided within the orbital ridge and directly into the tear troughs. But I have mastered a technique that restores volume to this area while avoiding injecting directly into the tear troughs and orbital ridge. By stimulating fibroblast activity and subsequent collagen production volume is restored and skin thickness is enhanced.
Setting expectations is key when utilizing Sculptra Aesthetics. Sculptra is intended for use in people with healthy immune systems as a treatment regimen of up to 3 – 4 injection sessions that are scheduled 4 weeks apart. It will take a couple of sessions before a patient starts seeing results, but the maximum results are seen 6 months after the treatment course is complete. This is because your fibroblasts continue to work hard to build collagen and so each day you will continue to see improvement. Sculptra can last up to 2 years, but I have all my patients return once a year for aone-time Sculptra Boost. This will maintain your volume and keep your skin looking smooth.
Sculptra has also been used to help with fine lines in the décolleté or chest region and volume loss in the temples. Sculptra, as well as Radiesse are also used to help build collagen in the buttocks giving a tighter, firmer look.
